On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the pier in Edgewater Park was officially inaugurated as the William-Bill-McMurchie Pier, in honour of the late former Pointe-Claire mayor William “Bill” McMurchie, who passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 93. One of the West Island’s longest-serving elected officials, he devoted nearly 57 years to the City of Pointe-Claire as both an employee and an elected official.
He first served as a city councillor from 1990 to 1998 and then as mayor from 1998 to 2013. From 2001 to 2005, he served as borough mayor during the municipal mergers, championing Pointe-Claire’s demerger from Montreal and the city’s return to independent status.
Throughout his years of public service, McMurchie placed great importance on environmental issues, shoreline preservation, and public access to the city’s waterfronts. He also played a significant role in the construction of the pier, making it a fitting location to honour his legacy.
