Hello once again, my Pointe-Claire friends! The year 2026 is now upon us. New Year's resolutions have been made and will be kept – well, at least most of them! Let’s look at what we can look forward to in the world of film. This year will bring a lot of anticipated new releases to movie theatres, including several that are sure to appeal to people of all ages!
Maggie Gyllenhaal is the director and scriptwriter of The Bride!, set for release in early March 2026. The film reimagines the classic tale of Frankenstein's bride and features a star-studded cast including Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard, Jessie Buckley, and Penélope Cruz.
Later in March, Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir's best-selling novel, is a sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling and is expected to generate buzz among fans of the genre. Andy Weir also wrote The Martian, which was a huge movie hit in 2015, with Matt Damon starring as an astronaut trying to survive alone on Mars after being presumed dead by his team, and his attempts to be rescued.
Mid-June brings something for the whole family with Toy Story 5: Now we’re talking! The much-loved franchise continues with another installment where Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang face the challenges of adapting to electronic devices in a world obsessed with tech. This definitely sounds relatable...
Supergirl, expected to be a summer blockbuster with its release in late June, is the latest entry to the DC Universe and a follow-up to last summer’s Superman reboot, with both films produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran. With a darker take on the character of Kara Zor-El, the film depicts her early life on a remnant of her destroyed home planet of Krypton and her desire to avenge those she lost before coming to Earth and becoming “Supergirl.”
The Odyssey, a new take on Homer’s Greek epic, stars Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway and tells the epic tale of Odysseus’s long journey home after the Trojan War. (Is Matt Damon getting typecast in all of these “stranded away from home” movies? One has to wonder.) Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is set for a July 2026 release.
In what is likely to be one of the lighter offerings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as Spider-Man in an eponymous film – and his seventh time portraying the beloved web-slinger (eighth, if you count the post-credit scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage). This film is highly anticipated by fans and will be released at the end of July.
Avengers: Doomsday, a continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is expected to be a major blockbuster. With an expected release in December, the movie serves as a sequel to Avengers: Endgame and is the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, bridging past heroes with new threats like Doctor Doom and setting up the next era of the franchise, including the X-Men.

What else can we expect for 2026, especially concerning Pointe-Claire? John Belvedere just took back the Pointe-Claire mayor's seat, winning his place with just over 41% of the vote.
Personally, I would like to see a strong woman take the seat of mayor again one day. It could bring a new dimension to politics in this city, or at least a fresh breath of air. Olive Urquhart served as Pointe-Claire’s first and only female mayor from 1954 to 1956 and 1958 to 1961, and was the second woman mayor of any city in Quebec. Considered a visionary, Urquhart oversaw the creation of the industrial park, the building of the Lakeshore General Hospital, contributed to the construction of the water purification plant, and modernized the city administration.
What do you think? Will Mayor Belvedere accomplish similar greatness in his second term? Only time will tell...
Bottom line (literally)… Wishing everyone and my favourite city a happy and prosperous 2026!
