The Pointe-Claire Citizens’ Association is proud to announce a fundraiser benefiting Ricochet (Hébergement/Homes) and West Island Mission, taking place on Saturday, May 31st, at 8 p.m. at the Mayfair Tavern featuring local rock legends J.B. and the Playboys.
J.B. and the Playboys made their debut in 1964, with Bill Hill on lead guitar, Allan Nicholls on vocals, Andy Kaye on guitar, Lorne Douglas West on drums, and Louis Atkins on bass. Getting their start in small venues throughout Montreal and the rest of Quebec, the band began performing in front of larger crowds in the Laurentians and the Eastern Townships.
The band attracted the attention of concert promoters, opening for The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones concert tours. The Playboys recorded several 45 rpm singles, getting play on radio stations across Quebec and resulting in the release of their first – and only – album in 1965.
With the band moving to Toronto after the release of their album, West and Kay were fired at the behest of the band’s manager, Lionel Pasen, and replaced by guitarist Jean-Pierre Lauzon and bassist Pete Carson. The band then changed their name to the Jaybees, but by 1967 their time had come to an end, releasing their final hit song, “Poster Man,” in 1968.
Since their recent re-release of their 1965 album, founding members Allan Nicholls and Bill Hill have been joined by drummer R.D. Harris, bassist Stuart Patterson, and Ron Stuz on guitar, and are ready to get the crowd dancing to support two of the West Island’s worthy causes.
Tickets for the event are $20. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item and to participate in a 50/50 draw to help raise additional funds. Tickets can be purchased at the door of the Mayfair Tavern (22 Baie de Valois Ave.) or in advance by clicking here. Please visit https://www.pointeclaire.info for more information.
