The City of Pointe-Claire will hold an inauguration ceremony for the William-Bill-McMurchie Pier on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Edgewater Park.

McMurchie passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 93 and was one of the longest-serving elected officials in the West Island, having devoted nearly 57 years to the City of Pointe-Claire.

He first served as a city councillor from 1990 to 1998 and then as mayor from 1998 to 2013. From 2001 to 2005, he served as borough mayor during the municipal mergers, championing Pointe-Claire’s demerger from Montreal and the city’s return to independent status.

McMurchie's legacy includes protecting Pointe-Claire's shorelines and natural waterfronts, opening the West Island's first Ecocentre, and creating guidelines to regulate wood-burning fireplace emissions.

Residents are invited to gather in the east section of the park, near Bowling Green Ave., and are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket if they wish to sit on the grass.

In the event of rain, the event will be postponed to Sunday, August 23.
